Mark Harmon exudes the pedigree of an athlete as the stoic boss of the television hit series NCIS. Harmon initially took his athletic prowess on the football field during his college days, but his success as a television and film star propelled his career toward Hollywood and not Canton.
The Burbank, California native managed to secure hero status during his quarterback days at UCLA. He led the Bruins for two seasons ('73-'74) while compiling 17-5 record with a huge upset of the two-time defending champion Nebraska Cornhuskers in his wake. Instead of launching right into professional football, Harmon's path included commercials work and guest appearances on television shows.
His start attached when he appeared as a doctor on St. Elsewhere. For three years in the 80s, his character on the Emmy-award-winning series gained a strong fan base that made his stock rise. For a while, Harmon bounced back and forth between movies and television roles. He appeared in a film with Meg Ryan and Sean Connery called Persidio Road. He played a character in the television series Moonlighting and other short lived roles. Ultimately, he established his present day character in the NCIS series through an role he played as an investigator in the television series JAG.
For the last eight years, his portrayed as NCIS agent Jethro Gibbs has propelled CBS' ranking through the roof. With fan interest in forensic analysis, the show concentrates on a squad of Navy investigators piecing together crime scene evidence as they pursue bads guys through complicated scenarios. For his body of work on television, Harmon has received ten nominations from the Daytime Emmy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the Emmys and People's Choice Awards.
