Joan Rivers could have been described as a jack-of-all-trades. Rivers was a world-famous talk-show host, comedienne, actress, author, playwright, screenwriter, film director, columnist, lecturer, radio host, jewelry designer and also ran her own cosmetics line.
Rivers became famous as the first woman on late night television, more specifically as a permanent host on The Tonight Show. Joan was mentored by the world-famous Johnny Carson, who had a big influence on her style as a comedian. Rivers left the show after three years to host her own talk show, The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers.
Joan also wrote 12 bestsellers, including memoirs and humor books. Even though Joan wrote quite a few books and also had her own talk show, she is still best known for her red carpet interviews and fashion related shows, including Fashion Police and Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? Due to her high standing in the fashion industry, Joan released a jewelry and apparel line of her own.
Rivers was married two times. Her first marriage was to James Sanger. Their marriage was annulled the same year they got married in 1955. Rivers was then married a second time to Edgar Rosenberg. Their first and only child, Melissa Rivers, was born on January 20, 1968. Even though their marriage seemed perfect at first, it became clear later that this was far from the truth. Rosenberg committed suicide after Joan told him she wanted to get a divorce. Rivers was quite open about her marriage to Rosenberg to the media, which she referred to as a “total sham”.
Joan Rivers died on August 20, 2014. She went in for a minor throat procedure at an outpatient clinic in Manhattan, but there were serious complications during the procedure. Rivers was transferred to another hospital and put on life support. She eventually died at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York due to brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen.
