Tom Cruise, at 21 years of age, became Americas teen idol in his break out movie Risky Business in 1983 and secured his position as one of Americas most sought after and richest movie stars now with a net worth of $582,877,500. He didn't do that just sliding around in his socks and underwear. His movies are among some of the top grossing films of all time.
Top Gun grossed $356 million and the first of the trilogy Mission Impossible raked in $457 million. In addition, twenty of his other films have made over $100 million each. You can see where this trend is heading. If star quality is defined by box office dividends, then Tom Cruise is definitely one of Hollywoods brightest.
He started acting in high school and upon graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his avocation. His very first movie Risky Business earned him a Golden Globe, and that was just the beginning of accolades to be bestowed. He has since won four Academy Awards for the films A Few Good Men, Mission Impossible, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia for which he also took home a another Golden Globe.
He has enjoyed both commercial and critical success and managed to bridge the gap between box office blockbusters and those winning critical praise for serious endeavors like the 1999 film Magnolia.
Cruise has been married three times. He was married to Mimi Rogers in 1987 and divorced in 1990. It was during his marriage to Mimi that he joined the controversial Church of Scientology. He met his second wife while making Days of Thunder, the lovely and a famous actress in her own right, Nicole Kidman. They were married in 1990, adopted a few kids, and divorced in 2001.
He has a penchant for falling love with his leading ladies, and Penelope Cruz was the next one as they met while making Vanilla Sky. But in 2005 after meeting Katie Holmes, 16 years younger than he, he was ready to walk up the aisle again. They remain married and are parents of one daughter Suri.
