Leonardo can be an elusive Hollywood figure when he wants to be. Instead of always portraying the sharp dressed leading man, DiCaprio has embroiled himself with controversial figures like Howard Hughes and his recent endeavor with J. Edgar Hoover. His long association with phenomenal directors demonstrates their willingness to have him on board to successfully tell the story they want.
His breakout appearance as Jack on the tri-hugic blockbuster Titanic was a grand pick by director James Cameron. Cameron says he had no idea who this fellow was that was auditioning for the part, but he did notice that his entire female staff managed to finagle their way into his reading. Cameron knew immediately that DiCaprio's was his guy.
His method of acting seems so natural. His boyish charm can give way to whatever the character calls for. For example, in his appearance in the Gangs of New York Martin Scorsese demanded that he dig down and be ruthless, belligerent and testy. Not too hard for the talent that DiCaprio brought to the set.
Along the way with numerous movies under his belt, DiCaprio has been nominated for Golden Globe Awards eight times and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Aviator. He has also been nominated by the Academy Awards, Screen Actors Guild and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for other roles.
His work with Tom Hanks in Catch Me if You Can started a long term relationship between the two talented actors. In that movie, he was able to portray a kid as young as 16 who became one of the FBI's most wanted men.
His environmentalism translates into the way he flies, the way he drives, the way he lives and the way he commits to activism. He is known for flying commercial as opposed to chartering private jets, he owns an electric Tesla Roadster, Fisker Karma plug in hybrid and a Toyota Prius. He has also installed solar panels on his house in California.
Currently, DiCaprio has landed in two new movies. The just released docudrama called J. Edgar, which was directed by Clint Eastwood and another large production currently being filmed called The Great Gatsby.
